------------ start of ciwintro.txt ------------------------------------- Introduction to the CPI-C Implementers' Workshop (4/12/95) ------------------------------------------------ The CPI-C Implementers' Workshop (CIW) is a forum of architects, implementers, and users of CPI-C. Its purpose is to define enhancements to CPI-C, to promote the implementation and use of CPI-C, and to move CPI-C toward consideration for standardization. Participation in the CIW is open to any person with an interest in CPI-C as an implementer or user. For additional information about the CIW, send a note to ciw-chair@networking.raleigh.ibm.com. The procedures of the CIW are described in the CIW Procedures Manual, available in the CIW document library (see below) as /pub/standards/ciw/general/ciwproc.ps. Intellectual property aspects of participating in and contributing to the CIW are covered by a CIW Member Agreement. Information about the member agreement may be obtained from: IBM Corporation Dept. E82, Bldg 673 P.O. Box 12195 Research Triangle Park, NC 27709 ATT: Tresa Schermerhorn The technical work items, schedules for their completion, and publication plan of the CIW are described in the CIW Technical Plan, available in the CIW document library as /pub/standards/ciw/general/ciwtech.ps. Electronic Infrastructure ------------------------- The CIW conducts much of its business between meetings via Internet e-mail lists. These lists are supported by a mail exploder currently provided by IBM. In addition, the same system also serves as a repository for the CIW document library files and for other files related to the CIW. These files include copies of presentations, architecture proposals and other documentation. The files are available to anyone with Internet access via anonymous ftp. Special Interest Groups ----------------------- The CIW is organized into different special interest groups (SIGs) for work on the different work items. The mail exploder enables members of a SIG to send mail to all other members of the SIG. Table 1 gives a listing of the SIGs, along with the sig-mail-list name and archive file for each SIG. ************* ** Table 1 ** ************* SIG sig-mail-list name archive file --------- ------------------ ------------ General CIW ciw-general general.95 ********************************************************** To send a message to all participants in a SIG, use your favorite mailer and address the message to: @networking.raleigh.ibm.com where is the sig-mail-list name for the SIG given in table 1. All SIG e-mail traffic is archived and available for retrieval via anonymous ftp. The archive file is listed in table 1. All archive files are in directory /pub/standards/ciw/maillogs. You can send a message to all CIW participants by using the following address: ciw-general@networking.raleigh.ibm.com Adding, Deleting Members of SIGs -------------------------------- To join or leave a SIG mailing list, send requests to: listproc@networking.raleigh.ibm.com Do not use a subject line. In the body of the request write subscribe (name of the SIG mailing list) (your name) For example, if Joe Nethead wishes to subscribe to the Automatic Data Conversion SIG mailing list, he sends a note to the listproc with this statement included in the body of his note: subscribe ciw-sig-adc Joe Nethead To unsubscribe from mailing lists, send a note to the same listproc, and include this line in the body: unsubscribe (name of the mailing list) Generic requests and problem reports on the mail exploder should be sent to: postmaster@networking.raleigh.ibm.com File Transfer Protocol (FTP) ---------------------------- In addition to e-mail support, networking.raleigh.ibm.com also provides for file distribution to CIW members. This is done by placing the files on the system and making them available via anonymous FTP. Each SIG has its own directory for files related to the SIG. The SIG directories are identified in the directory structure below. pub/standards/ciw | Ú---------*----*---*------------*----------*-------* | | | | | | conference sig general maillogs spec pseudo | *- 2rc *- accept-specific *- adc *- conformance *- dir *- fdx *- lang-bind *- nonblock *- osi-tp *- sec *- spec-local-addr Thus, for example, full-duplex files are found in /pub/standards/ciw/sig/fdx. Using FTP to Get a File ----------------------- The following instructions on using ftp assume direct connection to the Internet. If you access the Internet via a gateway or firewall system, the instructions will probably require modification. Step 1: ftp to the networking.raleigh.ibm.com system: ftp networking.raleigh.ibm.com Step 2: When prompted for userid enter: anonymous Step 3: When prompted for password, enter your e-mail address. Step 4: Enter the following ftp commands, substituting the appropriate string for and . cd mode i /* mode i sets mode to image, which is required for binary files such as postscript. This step is not required if the file is plain ascii. */ get . . . quit /* end ftp session */ ------------- end of ciwintro.txt ---------------------------------
